Easy miles on the treadmill, mainly to keep loose for the 5k tomorrow.

Tom Lee told me about this race on Monday and I decided it would be a great way to bechmark my pace. I have been training under the assumption that I'd run a 10k in about 50 minutes, so I estimated my finish to be in the 23:45 to 24:00 range. I finished in 22:41, which was much better than I'd hoped.

My legs and breathing felt great. Again, I felt really nauseous during my last push, which seems to happen a lot. Is this typical for most people?

Anyway, this run was great for my confidence. Funny as it sounds, I didn't really believe that a person could run a race at a pace faster than they'd trained. However, tapering and atmosphere make a big difference. I am going to base my future training paces from this result, and hope to have another positive experience at the Painter's 1/2 marathon in January

Today was my tempo run day, and the first day with a faster target. Instead of an 8:15 pace, I wanted to keep an 8:00 pace over the middle 4 miles of my run. I finished the entire run in 49:13, with split times of 8:35, 7:46, 7:59, 7:51, 7:50 and 8:20. The second mile was the most difficult, despite being the slowest. I hit my rhythm during the last two miles, which explains the similarity in times.

It's amazing what a successful race can do for confidence. One week ago I was questioning whether or not I could actually run a 10k in under 50 minutes. Today I essentially hit that time during a training run, and felt great doing it.

4 easy miles on the treadmill (6.5 mph ~ 9:14 pace). I was planning to run outside, but Superman Returns was showing in the gym, and I hadn't seen it.

The weather was great for a run today - 32 degrees and sunny. It's much better running in the cold than the heat.

My target for today was 5 half-mile intervals, each paced to take 3:40. The actual finish times were a little fast - 3:30, 3:30, 3:34, 3:34 and 3:34, which was definitely uncomfortable. I think I could have hit one more interval, but it would have been really hard.

Easy treadmill miles. It was awesome outside, but the movie "A Christmas Story" was showing and I wanted to watch - love that show :)

Today's run was bad, which I think was good for me in the long run (pun intended). I'm going to run the Painter's Canyon Half Marathon in January. My plan for this race has been survival, as my only purpose in participating is to fulfill a requirement of the St. George Runners Series. Today I ran 12 miles, hoping to get a feel for how prepared I am for the distance. The first 6.5 miles were great. During miles 6.5 to 10 I kept hoping that a big dog would jump out of the bushes and chase me so that I could run faster. I was spent at mile 10, slowed down further, and just finished.

My experience helped me realize that I won't be satisfied with survival in January. I don't have any illusions of running my best half-marathon (I'll try for that in the summer), but I do want to finish strong. It's clear that I'll need to run an increased amount of miles over the next few weeks.

The total time for the run was 1:42:25, which is an average of 8:32 per mile. My mile split times were: 8:35, 8:15, 7:42, 8:21, 8:22, 8:16, 8:32, 8:41, 8:40, 8:39, 9:15, 9:03.

The roads were wet and slushy from the night before so I stayed inside on the treadmill.

I ran 7 miles, with 4 of them at a tempo pace of 7:43. Total time for the run was 58:37.

I needed to have my car's safety & emissions inspection done today, so I dropped it off and ran while I waited. The sky was really overcast and there was intermittent snow, which seemed to affect my watch's ability to find a satellite signal. I got tired of waiting for the signal and ran for 62:30 at an easy pace. I'm guessing my distance was 7 miles.

I missed Wednesday's run and will be hard pressed to run tomorrow - work and life need to quit getting in the way of my running! :)

The weather today was really nice (about 50 degrees), but it's supposed to get cold and wet tonight. I chose to run long today and short tomorrow. I intentionally started slow so that I wouldn't repeat last week's crash at the end of the run. I had wanted to run the first half at about an 8:40, but was over 9:00. To be honest, I wasn't really motivated enough to run faster, as I spent the whole time thinking of the work I should be doing instead of running. Ironically, I enjoyed the run a lot more once I ran a little faster.

The total time was 1:46:48, which averages to an 8:50. The split times were 9:07, 9:04, 9:06, 9:02, 9:01, 8:47, 8:49, 8:50, 8:35, 8:38, 8:25, 8:29 and 0:51.

A new week and I'm ready to be back on track - 5 days running this week is my goal.

I ran 7 miles today, all on the treadmill, totalling 58:51. The first mile was a 9:15 warmup. The next 5.65 miles were paced at 8:20. The last third of a mile was at a 7:00 pace. The 8:20 pace didn't feel difficult at all. I'm hoping to hit 1:50 at the half-marathon next month, which is an 8:25 pace average. So far so good.

I need to record my blog entries right after I run - otherwise I'm stuck with only remembering the distance.

4 easy treadmill miles.

I was stuck inside again. I ran 1.25 miles at 7:20 with a half mile break, 1.0 miles at 7:20 with a half mile break, and finished with 0.5 miles at a 7:00 pace.

I'm getting a little burned out - I want to be faster than I am and it's a little frustrating that I'm not there yet.

It snowed last night and I didn't want to be out on the slippery roads, so today's running was all on the treadmill.

7 miles at 8:57

3 miles at 8:20

2 miles at 8:00.

Total time works out to 1:04:39.

I ran 8 miles in 1:08:12 (8:32 avg) with split times of 8:29, 8:25, 8:35, 8:31, 8:09, 8:08, 9:37 (hill climb out of the river bottoms), 8:14.

I've felt really unfocused during my runs of late. I'm getting the mileage, but I haven't zeroed in on my short-term goal. I keep looking to a 45 minute 10k, but the Painter's Canyon Half Marathon is looming. I keep switching between shorter faster paces and longer slower ones in order to train for both races. The result, I'm afraid, is that I'm not effectively training for either. It's left me feeling directionless.

Easy run - I could have run faster but didn't make myself do so. Total time was 1:11:47, or a 8:59 avg. Splits were 8:57, 8:41, 8:34, 9:14, 8:51, 9:16, 9:40 (Big hill involved), 8:30.

I had thought to run 8, but after I got to the 8 mile mark changed my mind so that I wouldn't have to run long on Saturday. I ran the Spanish Fork river trail, which was still pretty icy in spots. The trail is short, but it looks like the city is preparing to lengthen it.

Total time was 1:48:02 for an 8:49 average. Splits were 8:09, 8:15, 8:36, 8:46, 8:36, 8:37, 8:38, 8:50, 9:02, 9:47, 9:13, 9:12. I need to start focusing on my runs - I don't know how much good I'm doing by just slogging the miles.

The watch had a hard time holding a signal with all of the cloud cover and inversion. I ran my 5 mile route, finishing in 43:43, or an 8:51 average. Nothing special about the run.
